We are accepting APPLICATIONS (click here) for a TWO-WEEK Summer Animation Workshop. Film School Zlín and the Animation Studios in Zlín are opening their doors again to host a workshop in English for anyone interested in learning the basics of creating traditional animation. This workshop also gives participants the opportunity to learn about the cultural and film history of the Czech Republic and to travel on short excursions in Moravia. Program also includes evening and weekend sport, cultural and pub excursions.

Anyone over the age of 16 is encouraged to attend. No prior experience with animation is necessary. Students will learn the basics of pre-production, production and post-production for traditional, stop-motion, cut-out and cel animation. If you have an interest in traditional animation or just have an interest in Czech culture, we welcome you to apply for a place in our summer animation workshop!

Film School Zlín and the Dokořán enterprise invite you to attend a Screening of Short Student Films on two Monday evenings, February 4th and 18th at Dokořán, Masaryk Square 3/4 in Karviná-Fryštát. Admission is free.

Students at Film School Zlín continue to create award-winning documentaries, live action and animated films that are screened at film festivals in Czech Republic and around the world. On Mach 4, a collection of last year´s student films from Film school Zlín will be projected at Baťova Vila in Zlín.

   
>>> 25.09.2007 | Jan Balej comes to Film School Zlin!

Film School Zl?n will host Director, Animator, Scriptwriter and Designer Jan Balej, on Wednesday, September 26th. Balej will present his latest film, Jedn? noci v jednom m?st?, One Night in One Town. Since it premiered in January, 2007, this film has been awarded many outstanding prizes in various parts of the world including Best Feature-Length Animated Film at Anifest 2007.

Previous to producing Jedn? noci v jednom m?st?, Balej cooperated with reknowned Czech animators B?etislav Pojar, Vlasta Posp??ilov? and Aurel Klimt on two other feature-length films: Fimf?rum and Fimf?rum 2. Both films introduce puppet-animated episodes of fairy tales adapted from those of the famous Czech Comedian and Writer, Jan Werich.

Jan Balej produced Jedn? noci v jednom m?st? at the Prague-based studio - Hafan Film - which he founded in 1990 with longtime collaborator Miroslav ?p?la. Read more about Jan Balej HERE .

   
>>> 10.09.07 | Jičín - Town of Fairy Tales

This week, Film School Zl?n will be conducting a series of Animation Workshops at the 17th Annual Ji??n Festival ? The City of Fairy Tales .

Designed especially for children, this unique and lively, week-long cultural event (September 11 ? 16, 2007) offers a variety of interactive programs including dramatic performances, fairy tale readings, creative exhibitions and artistic workshops. According to tradition, everyone in town during the festival must respect the ?Seven Fairy Tale Commandments?. One of these insists that everyone has to perform at least one good deed a day and another forbids teachers and parents from getting angry.

Ji??n is a well-preserved town located 90km northeast of Prague and serves as a main entrance point to the picturesque and mystical ?esk? R?j?, also known as Bohemian Paradise. According to a well-loved Czech folk tale, the forests near Ji??n were once the home of Rumcajs the Robber (The Czech ?Robin Hood?), his family and a band of other bandits, forest spirits and water goblins.

For the second year in a row, Film School Zlin is offering a monetary prize of 10,000 CZK to the best graduating student from its two-year Diploma Programs: Animation, Producing & Directing, Image & Sound. Criteria used to determine the winner will include an assessment of individual study results, an evaluation of student participation in school projects, the individual?s ability to work as an effective part of a production crew and the results of the Absolutoria (Graduation) Exam.

   
>>> 02.05.2007 | Czech Documentary Filmmaker Bernard ?afa?

Famous Czech Documentary Filmmaker Bernard ?afa??k will speak to students at Film School Zlin on Wednesday, May 9th at 12:30. Living in exile for many years, Bernard ?afa??k made most of films in Switzerland and Germany between 1974 and 1990, including Das Kalte Paradies (1986) and Hunderennen (1983). More recently, he has made Cenzurovane sny (Censored Dreams, 1999) and Tane?ni(Dancing, 2006). Currently, ?afa??k is working on a documentary about typical Czech phenomena. International Festival of Animated Films in T?ebo?
May 3 ? 9, 2007

Film School Zl?n will be running animation workshops at Anifest 2007. Held in the historic, south bohemian town of T?ebo?, Anifest is the only international animated film festival in the Czech Republic and is considered to be one of the most prestigious in Europe.

The workshops are free and run from May 3 - 5, 9:00am-5:00pm. We encourage anyone ? adults and children ? to try out at a variety of animation techniques including pixilation, puppet or hand-drawn. Maybe YOU could discover your hidden talent for animation!

Anifest 2007 will feature 242 films from 38 countries, including one by an international student at Film School Zl?n. Freedom Never Alone , was created by Denizcan Yuzgul from Turkey.

>>> 27.04.2007 | Weekend in Paris with David Lynch

Students from Film School Zl?n will visit Paris from May 10-13 to attend The Air is on Fire, an exhibition featuring the artistic works of American filmmaker David Lynch. Presented at Fondation Cartier pour l?art Contemporain, this exhibition brings together Lynch?s paintings, photographs, drawings, sculpture, experimental films and sound installations, many of which have never before been shown to the public.

David Lynch has received four Academy Award nominations: Best Director for The Elephant Man (1980), Blue Velvet (1986) and Mulholland Drive (2001), as well as Best Adapted Screenplay for The Elephant Man (1980).

Film School Zl?n invites you to attend the Zl?n Spring M?zobran?, on Tuesday, May 1st, at 6:00pm in the Velk? Ateli?r (Large Studio). At this event, young artists from area art schools will display and perform their latest works. The evening will conclude with the premiere of a Multimedia Graduation Project by Ji?? Proch?zka, entitled St?n?tko ?lut?ho raj?ete.

Czech Film Director and Writer, Radim ?pa?ek, will speak to students at Film School Zl?n on Wednesday, March 25 @ 12:30 pm.

?pa?ek, who was born in Ostrava in 1973, started his career as a child actor. Years later, after working with several famous Czech Directors including Ondrej Trojan, V?ra Chytilov? and Bohdan Sl?ma, ?pa?ek decided to pursue a directing career himself.

In 1996, just after his first year of studies at FAMU, ?pa?ek directed Mlad? muzi pozn?vaj? svet (Young Men Discovering the World), a semi-documentary about the life of young people during the civil war in the Former Yugoslavia. This film won the Award of Ecumenical Jury - Special Mention at the 1996 Karlovy Vary Film Festival. In 1998, he followed this success with his next film Rychl? pohyby o?? (Rapid Eye Movement). More recently he directed Bezesn? noci (Sleepless Nights) and continues to direct episodes of the Prima Television Series Leti?t? (Airport).

>>> 11.04.2007 | Czech Director Zden?k Zelenka to speak at Film School April 26 @ 12:30pm.

Hodina klav?ru (The Piano Lesson), a new film by Czech Film Director and Writer Zden?k Zelenka, will pre-premiere at Film School Zl?n on Wednesday, April 26th @ 12:30. This film was made for Czech Television and will not be officially released until later this year. Zelenka will be present at this event to answer questions and to moderate a discussion after the screening.

Hodina klav?ru is a tragicomic tale about two, cured alcoholics and features well-known Czech actors Bolek Pol?vka (?t?st?, Mus?me si pom?hat, Pel??ky) , Pavel Li?ka (Nuda v Brn?, ??len?, ?t?st?) and Vilma Cibulkov? (Pupendo, Mazany Philip). The screenplay was written by Ji?? Huba?.

Zden?k Zelenka was born in Prague in 1954. He studied in the Directing Department at FAMU from 1976 ?1981 and worked for the famous Barrandov Studios for 10 years. Since 1991 Zelenka has been teaching his craft at Czech film schools and has been freelancing in the film industry. He has directed many projects including Rebelov? (Rebels, 2001), RumplCimprCampr (Rumpelstilskin,1997) and Nesmrteln? teta (Immortal Aunt,1993).

Czech Film Director, Writer and Actor Jan H?ebejk will speak to students at Film School Zl?n on Wednesday, March 14 @ 12:30 pm.

A 1991 graduate of FAMU, Jan H?ebejk has produced and directed many films including Co vsechno chcete vedet o sexu a boj?te se to proz?t (Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex But Were Afraid to Experience), Nedelejte nic, pokud k tomu nem?te v?zny duvod (You Do Nothing Because You?ve Got No Good Reason), Mus?me si pom?hat (Divided We Fall )and Horem p?dem (Up and Down). His most recent film Kr?ska v nesn?z?ch (Beauty in Trouble) was released in 2006.

Czech Film Producer, Director, Writer and Actor Jan Svěr?k will speak to students at Film School Zl?n on Friday, March 9th @ 2:15pm.

A 1988 graduate of FAMU, Jan Svěr?k has produced and directed many award-winning films including Rop?ci (Oilgobblers), Obecn? ?kola (Elementary School), Akumul?tor 1, Jizda (The Ride), Kolya and Tmavomodr? svět (Dark Blue World). His most recent film Vratn? lahve (Returnable Bottles) will premiere in Prague on March 8th.

Jan Svěr?k is the son of Zdenek Svěr?k. A former Czech Radio Broadcaster, Zdenek Svěr?k is one of the most recognized and widely celebrated of Czech personalities. He has served as screenwriter and actor for many of his son?s films including Kolya, which won an Academy Award for Best Foreign Film in 1996. He is also the subject of Jan Svěr?k?s 2004 documentary, Tat?nek (Dad).

3 Projects by Film School Zl?n Students were chosen for the official selection of the 17th Edition of the International Short-Film Festival of Cergy-Pontoise, France.

Nehoda (Accident), a hand-drawn 2D animation by Krystof Binder.
Leon, a hand-drawn, 2D animated film by Michal Opitz.

The Student Producers and Directors have been invited to travel to the Film Fesitval, located just outside of Paris, for the March 31st screenings.

>>> 11.12.2006 | Du?an Tranč?k to speak at Film School Zl

Slovak Film Director, Screenwriter, and Actor Du?an Tranč?k will speak at Zl?n Film School on December 20th. Since his 1970 graduation from FAMU, the Czech Film Academy in Prague, Tranč?k has made over 50 documentaries and 10 feature films. Most notable of these are Fotografovanie obyvateľov domu (Shooting Pictures of House Residents, 1968), ?ibenica (The Gallows, 1969) and In? l?ska (Another Love, 1985).

Du?an Tranč?k has also held many prestigious positions within the Slovak Film Community. He has served as President of the Slovak Film Union, President of the Association of Slovak Film Directors and as Director General of the Section of Media and Audiovision at the Slovak Ministry of Culture. Mr. Tranč?k also dedicates part of his time to educating the next generation of Czech and Slovak filmmakers. He has served as a lecturer of Feature Film Direction at V?MU in Bratislava and a lecturer of Film Criticism at Film School Zl?n.

   
>>> 11.23.2006 | Slovak Documentary Filmmaker Marko ?kop

On Dec 6, Film School Zl?n will host Marko ?kop. He will make a short presentation about his work and will answer student questions from 2:15 - 5:30pm.

?kop has been creating documentaries since 1999 and graduated from V?MU (Vysok? ?kola muzichk?chy umen?) in Bratislava in 2001. He has created films for Czech Television, Slovak State Television, Mark?za TV and Italian RAI and also works as an Assistant Lecturer in Journalism at Comenius University in Bratislava.

?kop is perhaps best known for his recent documentary, In? svety (Other Worlds), which was produced in cooperation with Czech Television and premiered in Bratislava in February, 2006. Produced over the course of three and a half years, this ambitious film follows six individuals living in ?ari?, a region of Eastern Slovakia. The film examines how the traditional diversity of the individuals in this region are slowly being smothered by the ever-encroaching threat of globalization. Marko ?kop wrote and directed the film. Igor Vrabec, Head of Film School Zl?n?s Sight and Sound Program, served as the sound engineer.
